I slept until 9am on Saturday morning, which for someone whose eyes regularly pop open at 6am is quite a feat. I was pretty pleased with my accomplishment and so naturally I decided to tweet about it:
I “slept in” until 9am this morning. Feeling refreshed!

I was about to hit update when I noticed something – I had put “slept in” in quotes, which would imply that I didn’t really sleep in. For some reason, I felt that I didn’t live up to society’s standard of sleeping in and as a result needed to qualify my statement with quotes. Sure I didn’t sleep until 11am or well past noon but I slept a good 3 hours longer than I usually do. I definitely slept in – no quotes needed.
It got me thinking – where else in life are we living up to someone else’s standard? Are you chasing down someone else’s version of success? Are you basing your life on another person’s opinion of happiness. Where else in your life are you using giant air quotes?
The next time you are feeling unsuccessful or unhappy or unproductive, ask yourself if you feel that way because you’re not measuring up to someone else’s ideas. If you all of the sudden feel the urge to change your life dramatically, make sure you are doing it to align with your own core values and not just because it seems like the thing to do.
Stop living your life in “quotes”.
Have you noticed yourself doing this ever? In what way?
