Thanksgiving is upon us once more and like many of you out there, the season is making me reflect on the things that I’m truly thankful for in this life. And there’s a lot to be thankful for. The one thing I continually come back to is my family – particularly my parents. I know that without the love, support and guidance of a one Maureen & Tony Blades there is no way I could have grown into the person I am today.
I’m thankful for a set of parents who stressed the importance of hard work. Who pushed me to dream bigger and reach farther than I could ever imagine.
I’m thankful for a mother who found ways to take whole summers off to spend time with me. To take trips to the library with me and play dress-up and teach me how to make homemade play-doh or dye an Easter egg just right.
I’m thankful for a father who taught me the value in music of all kinds – from jazz to calypso to old standards – and demonstrated the value of good story-telling.
I’m thankful for parents who told me I could be anything I wanted to be but also kept me grounded enough to know I would have to work hard to achieve the things I wanted.
I’m thankful for a father who spent afternoons teaching me to play softball and showed me how to set up my blocks for track races and took me each year to select new ice skates. I’m equally thankful for a mum who came to every track meet, meticulously sewed on every Brownie patch and planned the most exquisite birthday party celebrations.
I’m thankful for parents who would not settle for poor grades. Parents who would not let me throw in the towel. Parents who would not stand for reckless or foolish behavior.
And I’m thankful for parents who are still there for me to this day even though I’m adult.
Thanks Mum & Dad – I couldn’t have asked for a greater set of parents.
